SALTWELL Group has opened a new production facility in Santiago, Chile, aimed at boosting global supply of its reduced-sodium salt as food manufacturers face increasing pressure to cut sodium levels.
The Sweden-based company produces SALTWELL, a naturally derived salt containing about 35% less sodium than conventional salt while maintaining comparable taste, texture, and functionality, according to the company. The ingredient is designed as a clean-label, 1:1 replacement for standard salt across a wide range of food applications.
The new plant is strategically located near the Atacama salt flats, where SALTWELL sources its hypersaline raw materials. By situating production closer to these resources and to major export ports, the company expects to strengthen its supply chain and significantly expand capacity.
Most SALTWELL production will shift from Cyprus to the new Chilean facility, with the Cyprus site transitioning to specialty production and backup supply. The move is also expected to reduce transportation distances for raw materials, contributing to improved sustainability.
CEO Anders Hansson describes the facility as a “major strategic investment” that positions the company to meet rising demand from food manufacturers reformulating products to align with public health guidance and consumer expectations.
SALTWELL Group, part of Salinity, operates globally and supplies ingredients to major food producers seeking sodium reduction solutions without compromising flavor or functionality.
