Currently, CPGs are using OEM engineers and third-party service providers equally to support advancements in machine automation, support remote diagnostics, and manage data.

A new study from PMMI Business Intelligence, The Evolution of Automation 2017, predicts growth in third-party providers.

One Corporate Engineer in food said, “We have a third party manage our cyber security audits, but it’s costly.”

Internal engineers at the CPG will always play a role in machinery management in order to protect proprietary information, the report says. And OEMs have a vested interest in servicing equipment as well.

And there will be a need for even more specialized technicians in the future.

One CFO of a technology company warns, “There are too many companies trying to implement and manage advancing automation and data analysis internally; many lack the skills to do it properly.”
