OSHA launches injury tracking application to facilitate electronic submission of injury and illness records

The new application facilitates the implementation of OSHA’s final rule, effective January 1, 2017, which will be phased on over two years.

The OSHA Training Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District, the only authorized OSHA Training Institute Education Center headquartered in Northern California, has announced the launch of an application for electronic submission of injury and illness records to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The new Injury Tracking Application facilitates the implementation of OSHA’s final rule, effective January 1, 2017, which requires certain employers to electronically submit injury and illness data that they are currently required to record on their onsite OSHA Injury and Illness forms. 

“Analysis of the data submitted electronically by employers will allow OSHA to use its enforcement and compliance assistance resources more efficiently,” says Cari Elofson, assistant director of the OSHA Training Center at Chabot-Las Positas Community College District. “Some of the data will also be posted to the OSHA website to encourage employers to improve workplace safety and to provide valuable information to workers, customers, researchers and the general public.” 

OSHA’s final rule regarding injury and illness recordkeeping stipulates that establishments with 250 or more employees must electronically submit information from OSHA Forms 300 (Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses), 300A (Summary of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses), and 301 (Injury and Illness Incident Report). Establishments with 20-249 employees that are classified in certain industries with historically high rates of occupational injuries and illnesses must electronically submit information from OSHA Form 300A.

The new reporting requirements will be phased in over two years. In 2017, all covered establishments must submit information from their completed 2016 Form 300A by December 15, 2017. In 2018, covered establishments with 250 or more employees must submit information from all completed 2017 forms (300A, 300, and 301) by July 1, 2018, and covered establishments with 20-249 employees must submit information from their completed 2017 Form 300A by July 1, 2018. Beginning in 2019, covered establishments must submit the information by March 2 of each year.

OSHA will provide a secure website offering three options for data submission, including: 

  • Manually entering data into a web form; 
  • Uploading a CSV file to process single or multiple establishments at the same time; 
  • Transmitting data electronically via an API (application programming interface).
