Last-Mile-Delivery System: IoT Lockbox with Temperature Control

Designed to preserve medications and food delivered to consumers and save retailers millions in contactless delivery, the product appeared on Shark Tank on April 2.

The system, which has not launched yet commercially, is courier agnostic so that any delivery service, grocery pharmacy, big box retailer, or friend or family member can leave deliveries in the secure, temperature controlled lock-box.

DynoSafe, a climate-controlled, IoT enabled lockbox, appeared on ABC’s entrepreneurial-themed reality show, Shark Tank, Friday, April 2.  The show sees 40,000 applicants apply each season, and DynoSafe made the cut as an opportunity to address the “last-mile” in deliveries, the actual placement of goods on a consumer’s front porch. Unattended items are prone to theft from porch pirates or damage from the elements. These “last-mile” problems cost retailers millions and frustrates consumers: more than 1.7 million packages are reported stolen, lost or spoiled, at a cost of at least $25 million, every day. A deal was made with Robert Herjavec during their appearance, noting promise if the patent holds up.

“I was inspired to create DynoSafe as a solution for veterans suffering from PTSD and other disabilities that find going to the grocery store or pharmacy difficult,” said Rebecca Romanucci, CEO and founder, DynoSafe. “I saw many veterans receiving home deliveries for food medication that must be stored at an appropriate temperature to ensure their integrity remains safe for consumption and use. In the Arizona heat, this meant they were waiting by the door for hours to accept their package. Then in 2020 when the pandemic hit and general adoption of e-grocery skyrocketed, I knew DynoSafe was the solution that consumers and retailers alike have been looking for to ensure safe, temperature controlled, contactless home delivery.”

The company reports that DynoSafe is one of the only patented options on the market that integrates with a smartphone app, giving consumers the ability to lock/unlock, set and change temperatures, and to remotely assign names and temperature settings to one-time use codes.

The system, which has not launched yet commercially, is courier agnostic so that any delivery service, grocery pharmacy, big box retailer, or friend or family member can leave deliveries in the secure, temperature controlled lock-box. However, DynoSafe offers a retail-partner program that enables retailers to license the technology along with the following benefits:

  • Software integration
  • Branding of the unit
  • Ability to precool
  • One click unlock
  • Date/time/temp confirmation and data

The unit comes in a variety of sizes, styles, features, and functions. The initial roll out will be the mid-sized base unit, with interior dimensions: 27” x 24” x 24”. “Retailers who choose to partner with us, will receive the benefit of seamless software integration with their software, selection of size and functions, branding on the container, the ability to send an alert to pre-cool the container, have ‘one-click’ unlock, and a date/time/temperature stamp confirmation, which will significantly reduce loss claims,” said Katherine Verducci on behalf of the company. The unit uses electricity (common, 120 v). “Most homes made after 1960 have an outlet near their door or garage. We do have a battery backup for the keypad, which will be useful in times of power and internet outages,” Verduccci added.

Initial base units will feature preset temperatures available for ease-of-use. The customer can also select and assign their own temperature setting for each delivery, ranging from 0°F to ambient, the company reports.

Leasing, consumers, and more

DynoSafe will be rolled out via multiple avenues, direct-to-consumer and white label to consumer from a retailer. For now, interested parties can join a waitlist. There will be paths available for consumers to obtain the lockboxes directly from retailers as well. The retail partner decides how to roll it out, by direct sales, at a discount with a delivery subscription, or to lease it to their loyal customers with purchase of a delivery subscription.
