The recyclable capsule cup

About a decade ago, Barrie House’s single-serve capsule cup was developed to produce a better cup of coffee, not only from the taste perspective, but from the environmental perspective as well, says Zohar. The coffee company worked with Berry Plastics to redesign the cup’s sidewalls to include ridges and allow the specially designed filter to be positioned at the bottom of the capsule cup to improve the brewing and, therefore, the taste. Using 13-18 grams of coffee, which is Golden Cup certified by the Specialty Coffee Association of America, Barrie House’s capsule fits into Keurig machines.

The capsule is recyclable, and Barrie House continues to work on consumer education. “Consumers need to wait a minute or two for the capsule to cool, throw away the foil lid, dump the coffee and recycle the cup, just like people do with yogurt, for example,” Zohar states.
