GMA's fixes for nutrition panel

In a petition to the Food and Drug Administration, the Grocery Manufacturers of America suggested some simple changes to the Nutrition Facts Panel on packaged food, that, it said, “could help consumers make smarter dietary choices.”

GMA’s suggested changes included:

• Increase and boldface the font size of both serving size and calories, and eliminate the line that separates them;

• All companies should add a footnote directing consumers to www.Pyramid.gov for personalized nutrition information; and

• Use a dual column format for single serve packages listing nutrition information per serving and per package; when space is limited, use the line “Calories Per Container.”

For packaged food and beverages that could be eaten all at once, companies should have the flexibility to list calories and nutrients for the entire package as well as per serving, said GMA.

FDA said it is considering changes to the Nutrition Facts Panel, particularly for calories, serving sizes, and carbohydrates but has no timetable for proposing the changes.
