Irradiating hot dogs?

In a letter to Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman, American Meat Institute president J. Patrick Boyle applauded the proposed rule allowing red meat irradiation, but urged Glickman to petition FDA for approval of low-dose irradiation for all ready-to-eat meat and poultry products.

Because these products can harbor harmful pathogens, the added "insurance" of irradiation could be a major benefit, said Boyle.
