Innovative paper packs recognized by 3M

Pizza Hut's "Better Box" carry-out package was the Pick of the Pack award winner in the 1999 3M Scotchban Innovation Awards program. Selected as the most innovative and environmentally responsible entry, the box is made of 150#-test B-flute corrugated.

3M's FC-807 treatment on the inside of the box keeps grease and liquids from seeping through. Smurfit-Stone Container (Chicago, IL) converts the winning box.

This box replaces a carton made from E-flute corrugated that included a separate insert made of 33#-test B-flute corrugated. 3M's FC-807 treatment eliminated this insert, so Dallas-based Pizza Hut reduced paper usage by about 6깪 tons annually. For economy, a plastic lid support was also eliminated because the new carton is made from stronger B-flute.

Another winner was a Krispy Kreme donut package that uses Scotchban protector FC-845 to extend shelf life. RockTenn (Norcross, GA) is the converter of the winning package. And a notable finalist in the awards program was the McWaffle Sticks carton for Oak Brook, IL-based McDonald's Corp. Supplied by Westvaco (New York, NY), the carton is treated with Scotchban protectors FC-807 and FC-807A to keep syrup from staining the paperboard and to preserve product crispness.
