The new Linotype-Hell (Hauppauge, NY) Herkules imagesetter is configured with a RIP 60 extended power option. Separations are produced faster than before thanks primarily to a fiber optic link between the RIP and imagesetter. "Speed is the most impressive benefit of the new equipment," says CLP's Trey Ludford. "Separations that took 55 minutes before are now imaged in seven minutes." Adding the imagesetter provides the prepress company with a third backup, which eliminates workflow interruption when another unit is being serviced, or during heavy production periods. The internal drum-based imagesetter has a ± .0019" repeatability with maximum imaging size of 29.6" x 21.7". Ganging more than one job on this size allows Chicago Litho to optimize film use. A "punch" on the imagesetter stamps out a small area on the tail end of the film that assists in color registration.
