USDA has received more than 700 responses from consumers demanding that irradiated ground beef be clearly labeled so consumers know what they're buying.

Most parties agree that irradiation is a valuable tool in destroying harmful bacteria in food and that USDA needs to finalize its regulations to allow its use on raw ground beef. But there is sharp disagreement over how or whether irradiated products should be labeled. Meat companies fear the radura symbol for irradiation will drive away fearful consumers who don't understand the process.
