FDA nixes tomato health claim

FDA will not allow manufacturers of tomato products and dietary supplements containing lycopene to put health claims on labels and in advertising that link lycopene to a reduced risk of many forms of cancer.

The agency said it will allow only a few limited health claims to appear on packages of tomatoes and tomato sauce. According to FDA, the studies presented to support the health claim request were not conclusive.
