OMAC demos shine at Pack Expo
A highlight of Pack Expo International 2006, held recently at Chicago's McCormick Place, was the OMAC booth in the Concourse area between the North and South Halls. On display in a series of demos was controller-to-controller synchronization - over SERCOS, over EtherCAT, over Ethernet Powerlink, or over Profinet - that could bring a number of benefits to end users, but none greater than this: a reduction in floor space consumed by buffer zones or accumulation systems.

Top floor/shop floor: a temporal disconnect
Even though the May 24 Packaging Automation Forum sponsored by Packaging World and Automation World took place nearly three months ago, I continue to find important nuggets of insight as I review the Powerpoint presentations made at the forum. Take, for example, the illustration shown here, which comes from Procter & Gamble's Dave Chappell's presentation on Make2Pack. It's a powerful reminder of how the very meaning of time itself changes radically as we move from one level of a Consumer Packaged Goods company to another.

Tips on minimizing unplanned downtime

Make2Pack moves forward
Up for discussion at the November 16-17 Make2Pack meeting at Procter & Gamble's Brussels Innovation Center in Belgium will be a proposed PackML State Model version 3.0. This new state model has evolved from the original packaging machine version and is said to be much closer to the original S88.01 batch control equipment state model.
