“We waste 20% of film with leaking packages,” said one plant manager at a seafood operation.

Packagers are looking for better sealing and resealing closure, less wrinkles, better machining tolerances, improved oxygen scavenging, consistent bonding temperatures, and recyclability.

Sustainable packaging is beginning to be demanded by consumers, and other food industries are using more sustainable materials compared to this market, the report says.

Secondary packaging for distribution has to deliver better carton strength to protect product integrity cross country. Meat, poultry and seafood processors are also looking for moisture resistant materials like wax coatings to minimize losses if primary packages leak.
