"The Power of Packaging" is the theme of EastPack '96. Sponsored by the Herndon, VA-based Institute of Packaging Professionals and produced by Norwalk, CT-based Reed Exhibition Cos., the show's powerful return boasts a 50% increase in size. It takes place Tuesday, March 19 through Thursday, March 21, at the Philadelphia Convention Center. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday. This year's show includes the premiere of Packages '96. This unique pavilion will showcase award-winning and innovative applications of corrugated, folding cartons, glass and flexible packaging materials and closures. Its primary goal is to display these applications conveniently, in one area. The showcase is organized by The Assn. of Independent Corrugated Converters, The Natl. Paperbox Assn., The Glass Packaging Institute, and The Flexible Packaging Assn. "We are elated to be able to offer show attendees the ability to view the creative applications of these packaging materials so they can help their firms compete more effectively," says Howard Friedman of Reed Exhibition Cos. Launched at EastPack '94, The Creative Packaging Show returns to this year's exhibition, occupying over 25ꯠ sq ft--twice the size of the 1994 pavilion. Sponsored by the Package Design Council, this "show within a show" displays innovations in materials, containers, components, labels, graphics and printing. The SCAN-TECH pavilion also makes its way to EastPack '96. It focuses on automated data management products including automatic identification and data collection. Kennesaw, GA-based Women in Packaging is presenting a luncheon program on Wednesday, March 20. Nationally recognized human resources consultant Katherine E. IoPP is sponsoring a series of conferences to run concurrently with the exhibition. With special focus on the needs of the Northeast packager, the three-day conference, March 18-20 at the convention center, addresses the needs of a broad range of end-user industries. Two one-day sessions will be presented. On Monday, March 18, Designing Food Labels: How to Comply with FDA and USDA Regulations addresses regulatory requirements that affect food label design. On Wednesday, March 20, Fundamentals of Paperboard Packaging reviews various forms of paper-based packaging materials for a broad range of industries. Five two-day sessions take place Monday and Tuesday, March 18 and 19. Adhesives and Adhesion: How to Avoid Sticky Situations includes an introduction to current technology in packaging adhesives, with particular focus on high-speed and high-volume consumer goods manufacturers. Fundamentals of Plastics Packaging Short Course begins with an introductory-level explanation of polymers and different types of plastics. Fundamentals of Packaging Machinery and Line Design Short Course discusses machine design, line design and installation, as well as machinery specification and procurement. It's geared for pharmaceutical, food, hair care and other high-speed and high-volume consumer goods manufacturers. Packaging Sales: an Innovative, Problem Solving Approach targets a wide range of vertical industries. Finally, How to Analyze and Improve Packaging Line Performance is a workshop-style session designed to help participants improve their company's packaging line performance.
