'Mirror' bottle reflects sunscreen (sidebar)

Ormond Beach, FL-based Hawaiian Tropic/Tanning Research Labs won DuPont Silver for a bottle with a mirror embedded in its front panel. Empire/Emco worked with Hawaiian Tropic to design the bottle and served as a broker through bottle molding, decorating, and filling steps.

The high-density polyethylene bottles are extrusion blow-molded by Currier Plastics with Hawaiian Tropic’s name and sunburst logo embossed into the white bottle. Currier ships bottles to Hanes Erie for a three-step decorating process.

First, the words “Sheer Reflections Formula” are hot-stamped into the face of the bottle. Next comes two-color screen-printing on the front and back panels. Step three has Hanes Erie employees manually applying a 1”-diameter pressure-sensitive acrylic mirror to a matching recess in the bottle. A 3M adhesive keeps the mirror in place.

Hanes Erie sends decorated bottles to Hawaiian Tropic’s Ormond Beach facility for filling and application of a nine-component injection-molded flamingo pump from Seaquist Perfect. A matte polypropylene white “flamingo” dispenser tops the blue closure shroud.
