European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to assess food label claims...

The EFSA has stepped up its assessments of health claims on food packaging to require proof that foods do what they say. Set up in 2002, the EFSA is an independent agency that assesses safety throughout the food chain. Their first ruling: claims that foods and drinks containing probiotics can aid digestion or boost immunity are not provable. Products making such claims must remove them from their labels. Already 60 foods have had their "health benefits" rejected. By the end of 2010, the EFSA will have an approved list of health claims in place—assuring consumers that label's health benefits are real.
