General Packaging Equipment Co. was established in Houston, Texas, in August 1954, to manufacture vertical form fill seal (VFFS) machines.

The original General machine was designed and put into operation by Jim Wylie in 1949 for use in packaging peanuts at the Wylie Nut Company. Jim Wylie and George Perlitz, formerly in the wholesale grocery business, saw opportunity and formed the company.

Over the years, General has pioneered a number of developments in packaging with VFFS machines including running unsupported polyethylene, packaging liquids in bags, applying dispensing devices and others. General machines are widely in use for packaging coffee, liquid bleach, liquid food products, pool chemicals, sterilized water, gel packs, and a wide variety of other products.

General machines are known for their simple and rugged designs and their long-term reliable operation. A number of customers have been running their General machines for over 50 years.
