When Atlanta-based Coregistics acquired Chicago-area food and confectionery co-packer Cano Packaging in the last days of May, it gained more than a new geographic presence and assets including high-speed cartoning, vertical form/fill/seal, pouching and overwrapping.
The Cano facility currently has capacity in a five-day workweek for “roughly 500 million pieces per year in bags, pouches and cartons,” CEO Eric Wilhelm told Contract Packaging, adding that customer feedback indicates short-term demand for at least 150 million packages a year.
Wilhelm also confirmed that the Cano facility will expand from 250 to 1,000 employees and from 180,000 to 1 million square feet of operations space within three years; and that the acquisition will help Coregistics reach a short-term revenue goal of $100 million a year.
“This is not just the addition of a facility, and it’s not about going from four plants to five,” said Wilhelm, adding that the deal will provide an “exponential lift” in services at the firm’s other facilities in Atlanta, Indianapolis, Memphis and NJ, where a “Coregistic mentality” will enhance primary packaging, secondary packaging and supply chain logistics services company-wide, reducing network nodes and creating a platform for consistent, national service for leading brands.
