Coffee can is chock full of convenience.

New York-based Chock full o' Nuts Corp. has incorporated an easy-open ring-pull end on 12-oz cans of its new Cafe Blend line of coffee. Consumer appeal was the main attraction, says the firm's Andrea Bass.

Also appealing is the way the end protects against cuts. The 401 DTF double-safe end, supplied by Northern Can Systems (Canton, OH), features an additional piece of metal around the scored area that's shaped like an inverted S. As the end is pulled away from the can, the S-shaped fold is pushed inward, enclosing sharp edges on both the can and discardable end. Offset-printed pictograms on the end offer opening instructions. Introduced in September of 1994, the Cafe Blend line includes four varieties, which are sold in New York City and Eastern Seaboard states. Naturally, the convenience end carries an upcharge, but Bass would not quantify it.
