U.S. materials consumption to grow modestly

The consumption of U.S. packaging materials is expected to grow at a moderate rate of 3.2% annually through 2001, according to the new third edition of the Rauch Guide to the U.S.

According to the book, plastics have largely replaced glass for soft drinks, and plastics and flexible packaging have made significant inroads on paper. However, the widespread use of paperboard and corrugated cartons mean that paper and paperboard will continue to be the dominant packaging material into the next century.
