Irradiation petition

Twenty-eight food industry, academic and consumer groups signed onto a petition requesting that FDA approve the use of irradiation on a variety of ready-to-eat foods.

Products would include sprouts and seeds; juices, frozen fruits and vegetables; cut and packaged salads; refrigerated ready-to-eat meat and poultry products; hot dogs; dried meat and poultry products; and frozen meat and poultry. Irradiation would kill microbial pathogens that cause food-borne illness. FDA has yet to issue new regulations on labeling for irradiated products (see related story on irradiation, p.48).
