The integration of IT and OT

IT and OT need to unify networks and systems with one communication protocol to reap the benefits of a smarter plant floor.

A new study, The Evolution of Automation 2017, from PMMI Business Intelligence, says the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) forces IT and OT to collaborate, adding complexity at both the department level and the enterprise computing level. The report concludes that IIoT is not just a communications issue but a far bigger strategic proposition.

Fifty-eight percent of those polled say a collaborative environment is evolving, but that it will take time.

A major concern of digitization and connectivity is cyber security. Ninety-six percent of respondents say IT is responsible for selecting and implementing security solutions. The report does recommend considering partnering with a 3rd party security firm.
