Aquaprin pouch doubles as a cup

When Health Corp. of Rocky Mount, NC, launched Aquaprin aspirin pain reliever/antacid late last year, it wanted a pouchstock rigid enough to let consumers mix the powdered product with water right in the pouch and then use it as a drinking cup.

The firm found the material it needed in a paper/foil lamination from the Flexible Packaging Div. of Reynolds Metals (Richmond, VA). Aquaprin was so successful through direct mail it's expanding into drug chains this month. Reynolds gravure prints the 35# paper in three colors with a high-gloss coating, then extrusion laminates it to heavy-gauge .0007" foil. The final converting step is a heat-seal extrusion coating on the same tandem extruder used for the lamination. At Health Corp.'s plant, the rollstock is fed through one of four Prodo-Pak (Garfield, NJ) vf/f/s systems, each paired with an auger filler from All-Fill (Exton, PA). Suggested retail price for a carton of 12 pouches is $3.95.
