FTC criticizes health claims

FDA’s qualified health claims that are based on varying levels of scientific certainty are confusing to consumers, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

A study by the International Food Information Council found that only 22% of consumers could place the disclaimers in the correct order. FDA surveys and other research also found that many consumers could not identify the highest level of scientific certainty. The FTC recommended that better wording or graphics be used to mitigate the confusion.
