The healthcare packaging industry has lost one of its true pioneers with the passing of Bill Daly, whose decades of leadership helped shape how sterile medical packaging is designed, tested, and trusted.

Bill was the President and owner of Beacon Converters for more than 45 years, guiding the company’s evolution from a small bag business into a manufacturer of sterilization packaging. Under his stewardship, Beacon Converters became known for serving the needs of a highly regulated healthcare ecosystem—where quality, consistency, and sterility assurance are not just expectations, but requirements.

In 1994, Bill was among the founders of the Sterilized Packaging Manufacturers Council (SPMC). He served as its Chair from the organization’s inception until 2000. During this formative period, Bill provided the steady leadership necessary to transform early ideas into durable industry progress. One of his most lasting contributions was helping drive the standardization of commonly used test methods. The SPMC began this work by publishing documents to establish shared approaches, and then expanded into broader adoption through ASTM—helping ensure that performance evaluations could be compared and trusted across the industry.

Bill also played a key role in launching the SPMC’s Benchmarking Report, a tool designed for members operating in the highly regulated healthcare space. By enabling organizations to benchmark their performance against peers, the initiative supported continuous improvement and reinforced the importance of measurable, transparent quality.

As the industry reflects on Bill’s legacy, it’s clear his impact went beyond leadership roles and organizational milestones. He advanced the practical systems that manufacturers and partners rely on to protect patients—improving how sterility is maintained and how results are validated.

The SPMC and us here at Healthcare Packaging extend our sincere condolences to his family, colleagues, and friends. Bill Daly’s work will continue to influence sterile medical packaging standards, testing practices, and the collaborative spirit that drives the industry forward.
