Smithfield Foods has launched Smithfield Renewables, a new organizational initiative focused on carbon reduction and renewable energy efforts, as well as the company's goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 25 percent by 2025.

The director of Smithfield Renewables will be Kraig Westerbeek, who will lead and oversee the company’s GHG reduction efforts. Westerbeek also will lead an advisory committee tasked with evaluating projects and helping direct strategies for renewable energy projects at farms and facilities. For instance, refrigeration, boiler and other equipment will be upgraded, while on farms, one project will deal with converting manure into products from fertilizer to renewable energy sources.
