Predicting world demand for beer packages

Global demand for beer containers is expected to advance more than 3% per year, reaching 303 billion units in 2001, says a recent study from The Freedonia Group (Cleveland, OH).

Metal cans will gain market share at the expense of glass, to approach 30% of total beer containers in 2001. Light weight, resistance to breakage and attractive graphics drive cans' popularity. But the study also notes that glass bottles are enjoying a resurgence in developed markets like the U.S. based on their preferred use in the popular premium beer segment. Glass will also benefit from the trend toward smaller sizes and its dominant position in fast-growing beer markets like Southeast Asia. China alone will account for over 55% of world demand for beer bottles by 2001, says the study. Also predicted: By the end of this decade, bottles made of polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene naphthalate will be commercialized for beer, though cost and consumer reluctance will limit their popularity "for the foreseeable future." Their use will be concentrated largely in mature, developed markets like North America, Western Europe and Australia.
