Some studies show that the production, processing, packaging and
transportation of food may contribute up to one third of the
greenhouse-gas emissions each year. Making different food and beverage
choices can decrease your carbon cost: eating a locally-grown apple
instead of a banana flown in from Ecuador, or passing on a tilapia
fillet which has been frozen using electricity from a coal-fired power
plant and flown in from China on a carbon-dioxide-emitting jet. The
company also encourages drinking tap water instead of bottled water.
