Smithfield Foods Pledges to Become Carbon Negative

The announcement builds on Smithfield’s previous goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by 2025 across its entire supply chain.

Smithfield Foods, Inc. has committed to become carbon negative in all company-owned U.S. operations by 2030, going beyond carbon neutrality to effectively remove more carbon from the atmosphere than it emits. It plans to achieve this goal through a variety of strategies, including renewable natural gas ventures, regenerative agricultural practices, improvements in its animals’ diets, renewable electricity purchases, and transportation, logistics, and packaging projects. The company will not be purchasing carbon credits to offset emissions.
