Food Supply Industry Seeking Priority in COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution

Trade groups ban together in an effort to protect U.S. food workers.

Covid 19 Image

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 epidemic, over 70,000 food system workers in the U.S. have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Food & Environment Reporting Network, and the number of cases keeps rising at alarming rates.

Consequently, it’s no surprise that with Pfizer and Moderna reporting 90% or more effectiveness of their COVID-19 vaccines in clinical trials, a number of trade groups have sent a letter to the White House and are in discussions with President-elect Joe Biden’s transition team, urging them to give food processing and agriculture workers priority access to COVID-19 vaccines when they become available.

The groups’ rationale is obvious: Workers in the food industry are essential workers, ensuring the continuity of our nation’s food supply.

The efforts for prioritization are being led by: the American Bakers Association, American Frozen Food Institute, Consumer Brands Association, The Food Industry Association, Global Cold Chain Alliance, International Dairy Foods Association, National Automatic Merchandising Association, National Confectioners Association, National Grocers Association, National Restaurant Association, North American Millers Association, North American Meat Institute, Peanut and Tree Nut Processors Association, SNAC International, and United Fresh Produce Association.
