Fresh juice warnings

FDA is accepting comments on a proposal that would require juice manufacturers to put warning labels on unpasteurized juices saying the product can contain hazardous bacteria and could be harmful to children, the elderly and those with weak immune systems.

Manufacturers also would be required to set up procedures to show they are monitoring the "critical control points" in the processing where contamination is most likely to occur. The National Food Processors Assn. favors stronger rules that would require all juices to be pasteurized or otherwise treated for safety. Under FDA's proposal, stores selling juices for drinking on the premises would not be affected.
