Corrugated protects fruit shipments

Three tree fruit producers participated in a recent field test that revealed that new corrugated “common footprint containers” provided the best protection for fragile fruit like peaches and nectarines, with less bruising during transit.

The study also found that cooling of the fruit is up to 20% faster with these containers placed five boxes per layer on a pallet, rather than the traditional eight corrugated cases per layer, or returnable plastic crates. The test was conducted by the University of California-Davis for the California Tree Fruit Agreement. CTFA, Fibre Box Assn., and the Reusable Pallet & Crate Coalition jointly funded the field test.
