In February 2023, SunOpta opened a new plant in Midlothian, Texas, and the facility’s success was captured by five initiatives, as reported by Aaron Hand.
SunOpta began construction on its new Texas plant in September 2021 due to hitting capacity levels at its other facilities. Midlothian served as an ideal building location due to the company’s desire to have a plant in the South to complement its West Coast, East, and North facilities. In addition, favorable negotiations with the city of Midlothian and its proximity to important existing and new customers further drove progress.
SunOpta innovated their new facility on a tight timeline, but they drew upon lessons from their previous locations to make developments for (1) a best—in-class facility that featured (2) control, communication, and traceability, (3) sustainability designed throughout the facility, (4) wastewater treatment on site, and (5) a facility built for expansion.
