It comes as no surprise that Hershey’s and several other brands headlined the No. 10 spot with Listeria contamination reports. Food recalls made up three of ProFood World’s top 10 articles in 2024, and this one focuses on several ice cream products.

In June 2024, Totally Cool, a contract manufacturer of ice cream and ice cream novelties based in Maryland, recalled 67 products from 13 brands distributed nationwide due to possible Listeria contamination. At the time, no illnesses were reported.

The problem came to light when the FDA sampled ice cream products at Totally Cool, which revealed the presence of Listeria. The brands affected included Hershey’s, Friendly’s, Chipwich, and Jeni’s.

Crave Better Foods, the parent company of Chipwhich, said they maintained a small, separate production line at the Totally Cool facility to produce a limited quantity of its ice cream cookie sandwiches. Crave Better Foods issued a voluntary recall for some of its Vanilla Chocolate Chip Chipwich ice cream cookie sandwiches, and Hershey’s, one of Totally Cool’s manufacturing partners, issued a recall statement as well.
