PepsiCo announced that it is ending manufacturing and warehouse operations at a bottling facility in Cheverly, Maryland, after more than six decades of operation.

The plant closure has resulted in layoffs for 143 employees, 98 of whom were union members. The employees being laid off work in fleet, transport, manufacturing, and warehouse jobs.

According to the company, layoffs will not impact sales and delivery operations jobs.

"Our sales and delivery teams will continue operating in the area, and we are focused on supporting impacted employees through this transition with care and respect, including pay and benefits continuation through November 13, along with transition resources and support," PepsiCo says in a statement.

PepsiCo says the decision came from a need to adjust to changes in consumer demand, technology, and its operating network.

According to a Cheverly official, the plant is the highest grossing revenue generator in the town, adding roughly $200,000 annually.
