Global packaging market to grow 4.2% annually

Pira Intl.’s new study, The Future of Global Packaging, says the global packaging market value was $459 billion last year. By 2009, it is predicted to grow to $556 billion.

The study contains quantitative market sizes and five-year market forecasts for each key packaging material, end-user sector, region, and country. In-depth profiles of major packaging markets, analysis of packaging materials, key market drivers, and company activity are included in the report’s 500-plus pages and more than 800 tables and figures of primary research. Among the report’s highlights are the following:

• Food packaging is the largest end-use market, with anticipated annual growth of 4.6% leading to 2009 sales of $227 billion.

• Healthcare packaging represents the fastest-growing end-use market sector, with an average annual growth rate of 7.1% to 2009.

• The Asian market will experience significant growth, particularly in China where packaging consumption is expected to rise at an average annual rate of 8.2% to $51 billion by 2009.

• The fastest-growing market in Asia will be India, with 14.2% annual growth forecasted, reaching $13 billion by 2009.

• In central and eastern Europe, Poland is projected to grow the fastest, with packaging consumption rising 11% annually to $6 billion by 2009. Russia will remain the largest market in this region, reaching $18.5 billion four years from now.

• Paper and board are the most widely used packaging material globally, with sales of $176 billion last year. This market is predicted to grow 4.2% annually to $216 billion by 2009.
