New "smart" label

Frito-Lay introduced a new “smart snack” icon on packages of some of its foods. The yellow, green, and pink icon says “Great Taste, Smart Snack” with information on fats and cholesterol in the product.

To determine which products qualify for the label, Frito-Lay consulted with Dallas health and fitness guru Dr. Kenneth Cooper, founder of Cooper Aerobics Center. Dr. Cooper’s guidelines for a 1 oz serving include 150 calories or less, less than 35% of calories from fat (usually 5 g or less), less than 7% of calories from saturated fat (usually 1 g or less), 0 g of trans fat, and 240 mg or less of sodium. Frito-Lay’s baked line of Lay’s, Doritos, and Ruffles will bear the icon initially, with additional products added later.
