'Entry-level' craft beer

Designed to target “youthful” beer drinkers, Pintail Ale from BridgePort Brewing, Portland, OR, is packaged to be reminiscent of BridgePort’s other beers, while establishing an elegant, stylish design.

So says John Gross of CMD (Portland, OR), the brewery’s design consultant.

Pintail uses BridgePort’s proprietary amber glass bottle from Anchor Glass (Tampa, FL) and also the oval label shape of other brands from the brewery. “We maintained the oval shape found on other BridgePort brands,” Gross says. “The colors are as reflective of the Northwest as the Pintail duck is. It differs from most packaging colors used in the beer category, helping the brand to create a unique shelf presence.”

The front, back and neck labels are litho-printed by Inland Printing (La Crosse, WI), using five colors, including three shades of green and a metallic copper, plus varnish. The paper is 51# C1S label stock.

The beer is sold in six-packs and is available in barrels for on-premise dispensing. Introduced into most markets in seven Western States in January, the reaction from the trade and from consumers has been very positive, Gross reports. “The response has been overwhelmingly positive from young women and from domestic beer drinkers.” —AO
