Good night milk

An opaque PET 330-mL bottle, blow-molded using Owens-Illinois’ special ATX432 UV light barrier, is being used for Slumber Bedtime Milk.

The milk, produced by Red Kite Farms, Oxfordshire, England, is organic and contains a high level of melatonin. That’s because the milk comes from cows milked at night.

“PET was selected simply because it looks better than high-density polyethylene bottles that were available,” says Clare Pool, Red Lake’s farm director. “We charge a premium price, £0.79 (US $1.46), and we wanted a premium bottle.”

Sold through Waitrose stores and by mail order, the milk bottle is decorated by a vinyl label that’s applied via a Commander p-s labeler from Grahams UK, says Pool. The four-sided label for the square bottle is applied on the compact labeler with front and sides wiped down; the fourth side is wiped down as the bottle is discharged.

The pasteurized milk offers a 10-day shelf life under refrigeration, Pool says.
