Wholesaler Costco has recalled almost 80,000 pounds of its own-brand butter after finding its product labels were missing a key ingredient and potential allergen.
The company in October recalled 1,300 cases (46,800 lbs) of its Kirkland Signature Unsalted Sweet Cream Butter, and 900 cases (32,400 lbs) of its Kirkland Signature Salted Sweet Cream Butter, because both products’ labels were missing a “Contains Milk” statement, according to an announcement from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
In total, the recall included 79,200 lbs of butter, or 2,200 cases.
Both products listed cream as an ingredient, “but may be missing the Contains Milk statement,” which clarifies potential allergens within the product, the FDA notice says.
The FDA classified the recall as Class II, which it defines as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
The producer of the recalled butter products was Continental Dairy Facilities Southwest LLC, based in Littlefield, Texas. The recalled products were distributed only in Texas. The FDA’s notice includes a complete list of lot codes and best-by dates to check if a product is included in the recall.
The recall remains “ongoing” after the FDA first classified it on November 7.
